Originally produced by Mason at home in California, additional recording was done in Detroit and Miami. It’s a back to basics, ’70s style rock and Brit soul record. It contains some modern co-production by a number of folks including the Motor City’s Mark and Brian Pastoria (some of the mixing was also done in Detroit). It reveals Mason not only as a solid, focused, and relevant songwriter in the rock idiom, but as an expressive vocalist of uncanny power and depth (he’s actually gotten better over the decades). His guitar playing has continued to develop and grow: he is a far more interesting player than his peer Eric Clapton is at this stage of the game. There isn’t anything showy or hyper-consciously “dazzling” in the presentation, Mason’s always been humble, and he sets his playing and singing to be true to his songs. There are some stellar guests on the set, including Willie Nelson (playing guitar, not singing), and percussionist and vocalist Sheila E. The big surprise is soul/gospel vocalist Beth Griffith belting it out with great firepower. The production is warm, lively, and immediate. Aguadulce $13.98 Tomatito may be setting some kind of benchmark standard for fame by association. The flamenco guitarist is known in Spain as the instrumental partner of the modern genre-defining singer Camar? n during the ’80s. In the current U.S. and Latin world music worlds, recognition comes for his Spain duet collaborations with pianist Michel Camilo. On the global pop scale, it arrives more indirectly for his being the father of the three singers who form las Ketchup. Aguadulce translates as “fresh water” but this is a short drink, clocking in at under 33 minutes. (More than a few flamenco artists appear not to have moved beyond LP-length CDs, something like the ten-track country CD syndrome). The opening “Al Mariyya” makes it patently obvious that it is flying fingers virtuoso display time, plus handclaps. That pretty much tells the story, with the uptempo buler? as style dominating the selections. A touch of percussion on “A Miles,” his daughter Mari ? ngeles Fern? ndez Torres’ vocal turn breaks up the instrumental run on “D? nde Est? Tu Cari? o?” and “Porque T? lo Vales” is a solo excursion. Diego “El Cigala” drops in with two other guitars for a guest shot on the closing “Gallibando,” but the track generating the most sparks is “En Casa del Herrero,” with male vocalists Potito and Guadiana upping the intensity ante. This is deftly performed music fine for flamenco and acoustic guitar virtuoso fans, but not very involving for someone not already into either camp, or Tomatito as an artist himself. The big question: is anyone getting materially more music here than when Tomatito takes his guitar into an outside context, playing in an encounter of equals like, say, his collaboration with Michel Camilo? ~ Don Snowden, Rovi |

Ahead Rings Out [Bonus Tracks] $12.98 None of Jethro Tull’s progressive rock tendencies or classical influences followed Mick Abrahams into his creation of Blodwyn Pig, even with the inclusion Jack Lancaster’s sax- and flute-playing prowess. Instead, Abrahams built up a sturdy British blues-rock sound and used Lancaster’s horn work to add some fire to the band’s jazzy repertoire. Ahead Rings Out is a stellar concoction of gritty yet flamboyant blues-rock tunes and open-ended jazz centered around Mick Abrahams’ cool-handed guitar playing, but it’s the nonstop infusion of the other styles that makes the album such a solid listen. After only one album with Jethro Tull, Abrahams left to form this band, and it’s evident that he had a lot of pent-up energy inside him when he recorded each of the album’s tracks. With a barrage of electrifying rhythms and fleeting saxophone and woodwind excursions, cuts like “Sing Me a Song That I Know,” “Up and Coming,” and “Backwash” whip up highly energetic sprees of rock and blues. Most of the tracks have a hearty shot of rock up the middle, but in cuts like “The Change Song” and “Backwash,” the explosive riffs are accompanied by a big band style of enthusiasm, adding even more depth to the material. Andy Pyle’s bass playing is definitely distinct throughout each track and is used for anything but a steady background, while labeling Ron Berg’s drumming as freewheeling and intemperate would be an understatement. It’s apparent that Blodwyn Pig’s style is indeed distinct, releasing a liberated and devil-may-care intensity while still managing to stay on track, but the fact that each cut convokes a different type of instrumental spiritedness is where the album really gains its reputation. Wonderfully busy and even a tad motley in some places, Ahead Rings Out shows off the power and vitality that can be channeled by combining a number of classic styles without sounding pretentious or overly inflated.
