1966 World Tour: The Home Movies $14.99 Director Joel Gilbert works with drummer Mickey Jones to issue a behind-the-scenes documentary of the 1966 Bob Dylan and the Band tour, as well as an inadvertent companion piece to Martin Scorsese’s No Direction Home film. Well, if not a companion piece, a parallel point of view. Even filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker took some of the 8mm footage when Jones was busy working with his musician hat on, and this documentary is an impressive collection of these clips, a 1966 version of a “webcam” with tons of commentary by the man who was there and visually documented the tour. There are some great interviews with Johnny Rivers, Trini Lopez and Charlie Daniels, and ’60s footage of the Beatles, Johnny Rivers, Chuck Berry and Trini Lopez. The music is provided by Highway 61 Revisited, not Bob Dylan, but you didn’t come to hear the music. It’s just part of the background setting for the information, which is textbook valuable, and — just as important — fun to listen to and watch. The disclaimer “Not affiliated with Bob Dylan” on the back of this package refers to the business side of things, this is certainly a “Dylan” release, at least as far as those who need to know everything about their hero are concerned. 3D $17.98 When one first glances at the cover of Casey Driessen’s 3D, it’s difficult to know what to expect. Driessen’s red hair is brushed back, and he’s wearing these funky 3D glasses with a “3″ on one lens and a “D” on the other. From this info, one might be prepared for spacey electronic music or perhaps a surrealistic singer/songwriter. But the final clue at the bottom on the cover photo is the head of a fiddle, Driessen’s instrument of choice, which may or may not lead one to guess 3D’s dominant musical style: progressive instrumental Celtic music. Listeners have probably never heard “Sally in the Garden” arranged with drums, programming, and an electric sruti box, though the addition of Jerry Douglas’ dobro, Tim O’Brien’s bouzouki, and Driessen’s fiddle add stable elements. It’s as though the players started with a fairly traditional base of acoustic instruments and then inserted percussion, progressive material, and the occasional electronic element to spice things up. Even on more conservative — instrumentally speaking — tunes like Driessen’s “The Confusion Before Dreams” proves quite compelling, and the vocal numbers, often a distraction on primarily instrumental albums, are fun. There’s a funky take on “Sugarfoot Rag” with Driessen’s ultra-cool vocal and Darrell Scott spunky guitar work. While a number of semi-progressive musicians like O’Brien have gotten lots of credit for pushing bluegrass and Celtic in new directions, the results (as with O’Brien’s dual release in 2005) seem rather tepid compared to 3D. (Fragezeichen) $11.99 In appearance, the second Nena album again bears typical hallmarks of a new wave act: a shadowy band photo on a black background on the cover and nothing more than a question mark as its title. However, as with the debut album, the music has little to do with actual deconstructionist strategies or new wave’s typical intent to disturb. In fact, it is even further removed from that than its predecessor, which was driven by forceful songs and Nena’s almost masculine singing approach on that occasion. The opening “Rette Mich” does pick up from there, but the rest of the album contrasts the debut by being much more romantic. Love and longing are the main subjects, with Nena’s voice conveying a touching vulnerability that suits the wistful mood of the album perfectly. The music veers even closer to the magical sounds of ’70s Baroque rock, which there had also been hints of on the first album. The song structures, however, retain an ’80s simplicity, with writing credits spreading out even more evenly between all five bandmembers in various combinations, retaining their general tendency toward classy, beautiful pop melodies. Its tender atmosphere makes it truly special among Nena’s albums. The title track, first launched as a surprisingly laid-back single in late 1983, features lyrics by Nena herself about the emotional to and fro (and acceptance) of one’s own contradicting desires, and despite its lack of musical excitement, the song took on an anthemic quality for Nena’s fans. In Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, the album consolidated the band’s stature as the unsurpassable success story of the moment. Moreover, the concentration of the media on Nena significantly drained attention away from the German new wave scene in general, and by year’s end there was a consensus that the drive to commercialize new wave in Germany had actually finished it off as a genuine movement. A Trip Down the Sunset Strip $16.98 While the Leathercoated Minds is an inarguably superb name for a rock & roll band, the sad truth is it didn’t really belong to a group at all. Producer and entrepreneur Snuff Garrett wanted to put together an album designed to give clueless, would-be hipsters an idea of what a night on Hollywood’s fabled Sunset Strip was like; he’d already chosen a snazzy cover photo, and needed some session cats to throw together a half-hour of music to go along with it. Garrett hired a then little-known musician named J.J. Cale to produce the album and play lead guitar, and Cale’s fleet but laid-back picking is all over this album. Cale overdubs a handful of Roger McGuinn-style lead lines all over “Eight Miles High” and “Mr. Tambourine Man,” he throws some twang-centric psychedelia into “Over Under Sideways Down” and “Sunshine Superman,” and contributes some enjoyable original throwaways with titles like “Sunset and Clark” and “Pot Luck.” Cale and his studio partners (no one’s sure just who they are besides Roger Tillison on vocals, though Cale’s buddy Leon Russell is probably playing keyboards) probably tossed this off in a couple afternoons, but it sounds like they were having a good time doing it, and the picking is uniformly fine while the arrangements are a shade more imaginative than one might expect for a quickie knock-off album like this. Anyone expecting A Trip Down the Sunset Strip to be some sort of lost masterwork is only fooling themselves, but it’s a fun listen with plenty of crackerjack guitar work, and it has the good sense to wrap up its business in less than 30 minutes; those with an interest in either Cale or pop culture of the period will want to give it a spin. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Abattoir Blues Tour [2CD/2DVD] $30.99 It’s got all the look of “deluxe” written on it, the thick, book-like black cover with an inset photo of frontman Nick Cave doing his flip to wig city dance — Bad Seeds fans don’t need much encouragement to rush out and pick up something by St. Nick and his motley crew of bent ministers of melody, and there’s good reason. This double-DVD/double-CD package assembled from the Abattoir Blues Tour in 2003 and 2004 is quite a thing. The 17 tracks that cover the CDs are taken from dates throughout the tour. Sound is wonderful — particularly with the new ambient, noisier aspect of the Bad Seeds put into place by Warren Ellis’ violin. Opening with “O Children” in Dusseldorf backed by a quartet of female backing singers and the sheer drama the Bad Seeds put into backing their boss’ baritone harangue, the Seeds are in prime form. The proof of this is underscored in the freaky-deaky Aussie funk blues of “Hiding All Away,” where Mick Harvey’s guitars sting and spark. And so it goes. The lion’s share of the material comes from the Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus double, but there are some choice moments from the back catalog as well as nuggets such as “Red Right Hand,” “The Ship Song,” “The Weeping Song,” and “Stagger Lee” rounding out disc one, and “God Is in the House” (which could have been left off and made this a single disc!), “Deanna,” and “Lay Me Low.”The DVDs contain a pair of shows. The first is live at the Brixton Academy in November of 2004, and the material is simply woven together so tightly that it’s hard to believe not every gesture is rehearsed. Cave engages his audience in front of a band so utterly in sync with one another they’ve become the complete evil twin version of the E Street Band. The material is obviously similar to the material on the CDs, but being one show, it flows better and there are some different track selections (on the second DVD anyway). Ain’t Got No Home: The Best of Clarence Frogman Henry $9.99 Scoring an unexpected novelty hit with the title track in 1956, Henry disappeared from the charts for four years before roaring back with two smashes in the early ’60s, “(I Don’t Know Why) But I Do” and “You Always Hurt the One You Love.” Actually, Clarence recorded a fair number of singles for Chess’ Argo subsidiary between 1956 and 1964 in the relaxed New Orleans R&B styles of his big hits. Ain’t Got No Home includes 18 of these sides, most of which were previously unavailable on U.S. album. Henry developed slightly over the course of his career, adding beefier horn sections that occasionally reached back to the spirit of Dixieland. Crescent City legends like saxophonist Lee Allen and pianists Allen Toussaint and Paul Gayton crop up on these sessions; when Henry traveled to Memphis for a session, he was backed by the all-star band of Bill Justis (guitar), Boots Randolph (sax), and Floyd Cramer (piano). A bit more eccentric and unpredictable than Fats Domino, not as contemporary or inventive as, say, Lee Dorsey, Henry’s vocals were consistently warm and humorous, his recordings always polished. That said, the hits remain the standouts on this collection. The rest is pleasant and fun, but don’t vary much from the prototype or cause exceptional interest. A couple tracks worth noting are “I Love You, Yes I Do,” an R&B ballad subsequently covered by several acts during the ’60s, and the 1964 single “Long Lost and Worried,” written by a young Dr. John. American Garage $11.99 The back liner photo gives the impression of a grungy Midwestern garage band, but no, that doesn’t describe this sophisticated jazz-rock quartet, which was simultaneously breaking into mass-market acceptance and away from the contemplative ECM stereotype. The arrangements are more structured, the playing often more intense and searching, with a more pronounced rock influence. On the title track, Metheny digs in and displays some authoritative rock-oriented licks and intensity, and the rhythms on “The Search” have a slight, at times asymmetrical Latin feeling. The nearly 13-minute “The Epic” finds the Metheny group developing some real combustion in the improvised sections as Metheny, keyboardist Lyle Mays, bassist Mark Egan and drummer Danny Gottlieb grow tighter as a unit. American III: Solitary Man $11.99 The Man In Black shows hints of gray on American III: Solitary Man, his first studio album since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1997. While the inevitability of aging has been the downfall of many of his contemporaries, ending usually in dismissal and often in death, Johnny Cash’s dark convictions and powerful presence have gone from rough hardwood to solid stone. The stark beauty of his 1994 release American Recordings and the warm, friendly collaborations on 1996′s Unchained combine on this album to create two distinct moods: one of living room jam sessions with invited friends, and another of stark solo (and near-solo) songs highlighting Cash’s years and stories. Like his two previous studio albums, Solitary Man is sparsely produced by Rick Rubin, and continues the themes of love, faith, and loneliness that their previous collaborations have chillingly embraced. Partnering once again with Tom Petty, the two join together on Petty’s own “I Won’t Back Down” and the Neil Diamond-penned title track. Cash also lays his lonesome hands on U2′s “One” and reunites with fellow outlaw Merle Haggard on the stubborn “I’m Leavin’ Now,” which could serve as the soundtrack for the notorious photo of Cash’s sneering middle finger published in Billboard after his Grammy award. These duets and well-known covers show an inviting side of Johnny Cash. But the real highlights of the album are those reminiscent of his American Recordings songs; they feature just the man and his guitar, with nothing else to clutter the story. The creaks and despair of the vaudeville song “Nobody” tell of a man who has become hardened by his solitude, while the Palace hymn “I See a Darkness” soars with the passion of a thousand gospel choirs, even though there are only two men singing. These rare recordings, most of which were released during the latter half of the ? 70s and the year 1980, resemble — and, in some cases, are — L.A. records, meaning that they have the relaxed and polished ? smooth soul meets soft rock? sound that L.A. studios pumped out in torrents. The most ? L.A.? inclusion here would have to be Jaye P. Morgan’s fluid version of ? Can? t Hide Love,? written by Skip Scarborough and also recorded by Creative Source, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Dionne Warwick; the singer is surrounded by an L.A.-based cast heard on heaps of other releases, including a pre-fame David Foster, Harvey Mason, Ray Parker Jr., a handful of Toto members, and the horn section from Tower of Power. A close second would be ? Living Off the Love,? an elegant number from Lee Ritenour associate Eric Tagg. Several artists were actually based in Hawaii, and all of them would have been worthy of warming up for the state? s Seawind. Just the names of certain acts — Midnight Flyer, Tender Leaf, and the unhyphenated 1619 Bad Ass Band among them — are likely to attract or repulse listeners. Analog $19.98 Although most of us have come to know the music of Philip Glass through one recording or another, he came rather late to utilizing recording as a means to aid composition — the recordings on Orange Mountain Music’s Analog, his first multi-track recordings, date from 1977 and 1980. Overall, Glass doesn’t seem to have used such techniques often for purposes of composing, preferring to work with conventionally written out scores, live instruments, orchestras, or at a piano or keyboard. Analog contains pieces taken from the oldest two-inch tapes in Glass’ own archive and remixed in the digital domain. Although issued here under its original title of Etoile Polaire, the first work included is the same recording issued by Virgin in 1977 as North Star; the CD version of that early LP was still being traded by EMI in October 2006. The difference, and it’s a significant one, is that the Orange Mountain Music is taken from the original multi-track and mixed as though it were a new recording, whereas Virgin’s North Star would have as its source a two-track master mixed down for the LP. It is amazing to hear how well the Orange Mountain CD can reproduce the analog audio signal of the original tape, delivering low bass notes from the electronic organ parts, that tend to disappear on vinyl, with the kind of crispness and fidelity one only could’ve heard in a recording studio back in the ’70s. Mad Rush, better known as a piano piece and recorded by Glass in 1989 for the CBS album Philip Glass: Solo Piano, is heard in an organ version recorded for the use of choreographer Lucinda Childs in 1980. Dressed Like an Egg, composed for the 1977 Holland Festival, is musically related to Another Look at Harmony Part IV but practically to the session that produced Etoile Polaire. Hardcore followers may be disappointed by the presence of the cover songs (“Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak and “Solitary Man” by Neil Diamond) instead of the strangely omitted album cuts like “And Love Said No” and “Beyond Redemption.” But regardless, this 16-song collection is definitely the best starting point for freshmen to the school of H.I.M., and for those who are looking to learn more about the origin of Bam Margera’s pentagram heart logo. BIPPP: French Synth Wave 1979-85 $15.98 The eternal impulse to collate, collect, and revisit never dies, though at times it can gain unexpected accents. And in a time when roughly recorded obscurities from non-Western countries tend to get such a focus, the idea of a collection of French post-punk efforts getting an album showcase might seem curious. But that’s precisely what BIPPP is, collecting efforts recorded during the late ’70s and early ’80s from bands that were as in thrall to the possibilities of electronics in rock & roll as any number of counterparts in other countries. If much of the compilation will suggest more familiar Anglophonic analogues for many listeners, at its best there’s a deft display of familiar elements at work — the blend of spiraling, nervous guitar and keyboards on Act’s “Ping Pong” suggests everything from Andy Summers’ work in the Police to early New Order’s tentative explorations. In keeping with the subtitle of the compilation, synths play a key role on nearly every track, and if things sometimes aren’t much advanced beyond evident appreciation of the Human League, Gary Numan, Soft Cell, and of course Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode, hearing moments like the weird raindrop chimes in the background on “Je T’Ecris d’Un Pays” by Les Visiteurs du Soir and the clipped horn breaks on Ruth’s “Polaro? d/Roman/Photo” leaven the mix. Full-on synth-only efforts are in the minority, but Comix’s “Touche Pas Mon Sexe” and Visible’s “Le Jour Se Leve” fly the flag. Hearing the singer for A Trois dans les WC gasp/whine out the title of “Contagion” may be a bit surprising but it’s impossible to knock the bass-heavy, crisp, and weird glide of the music, while it’s a bit amusing how the start of Marie M? ? r’s “Pretty Day” uncannily resembles a slowed-down take on the Fall’s “The Man Whose Head Expanded” — but likely it was the same keyboard being used. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi |
